There’s no way to abuse this, at all.

Posted by Jeremy on 4th August 2008

So if you have kids you know who Hannah Montana is. If you don’t, then let Wikipedia tell you who she is.

HannahMontanaCalls.Com

Anyway, there probably isn’t any way possible to abuse this, but there’s a website called HannahMontanaCalls.com. You click on ‘register’ and it asks for your name and phone number and your child’s name and phone number. You set a time, and a call type - you can choose from a wake up call, a “don’t forget to buy school supplies” message or one of a dozen different canned messages (My favorite is “Don’t forget today you have Cooking Club”).

Sounds fairly nice, until you realize it uses the number you used as your number as the originating number - meaning it shows up on the caller ID as calling from whatever number you entered. So if you were an asshole you could, for example, set a 3am or 4am wake up call to your boss, with the originating phone number the CEO of your company - or any equally high level exec that your boss is sure to have in their phone book.

If you were an asshole, that is.

Metric Time

This comment on TheDailyWTF.Com forums made me laugh. It’s either too early in the morning or I’m a geek. Or, I suspect, both.

So how bad is this? And a Friends With Benefits Summary.

Posted by Jeremy on 6th July 2008

So somewhere or other on the interwebs I found a link to Crystal Disk Info and downloaded it. Ran it at work on my work laptop and everything was A-OK. I thought to myself, neat little utility, need to remember that for the home computers.

So I brought it home and ran it on my Dell. This is what it told me:

CrystalDiskInfo for my Dell Laptop

So I wonder how bad this is, and if Dell will send me a new laptop. I dumped it all to an external drive thanks to SyncBack, but just to be safe I think I should call it in.

It says I have 100 reallocated sectors. According to this website a reallocated sector is when the hard drive finds a bad spot on the drive and moves everything off of it to another “reserved” sector. It seems like the other 2 attributes (”Current Pending Sector Count” and “Uncorrectable Sector Count”) are related to it. Just not sure how bad it is. I’m used to server hardware, not consumer stuff. I’m fairly certain that Dell will say it’s ‘within limits’ - I’ll find out. I’m used to server level 3rd tier support - if I felt something looked at me funny I could tell them to send me a new one. I get a feeling it doesn’t work this way for run of the mill consumers :(

Anyway, to lighten the mood some here’s a picture I ran across. The “Friends with Benefits” benefit summar prospectus. Click to see it full size.

Two Pictures

Posted by Jeremy on 7th March 2008

One:

What the sign meant to say is the meeting was to be held at Senor Wong’s - an Asian/Mexican fusion place a few doors down from where we live.

Two:

NOFX Ticket

Oh yes, I’m going to NOFX baby! I’m sure tickets are still available, come join me! This is the second time I’ve seen them, the first being at the Triple Rock when I was dressed as a priest for the shooting of their music video “Seeing Double at the Triple Rock” That also means that in preperation for Sunday, I will be listening to NOFX, NuFan and The Flatliners all day. And Bad Religion. They’re a staple in my diet of Awesomeness.

FYI: Here’s the video. I’m in it, but you have to really look for me - apparently the authentic Spanish Padre look wasn’t exactly what they wanted.

The internet is a wonderful thing

Posted by Jeremy on 6th February 2008

Ah, the internet, what can you teach us today? HowCast, started by several ex-googlers who worked on YouTube and Google Video, aim to show us the how to on all kinds of things - string em together and you get a complete weekend - check it out!

First, how to make yourself irresistible to women:

Then, how to make a killer dirty martini:

After that, go and get yourself laid:

If that was successful, then the next morning you’ll probably need to figure out how to get rid of her:

Or, if that didn’t work, you might need to take some ‘drastic’ measures:

Huzzah, Internet!

Dumbest Cop Ever

Posted by Jeremy on 6th December 2007

An officer with the Dearborn Michigan police force admits to confiscating pot from people, then baking it into brownies for him and his wife. He’s not charged with anything, nor is he fired. He’s allowed to resign. The only good thing that comes out of it, is a news piece from FOX station Q13 about the event, and the recorded 911 call the officer made when he thought he was overdosing on pot. Enjoy - I’ve watched it 10 times now, and it keeps getting better. Especially the news staff laughing their ass off.
